Helly Hansen Ted ski jacket

Helly Hansen Ted Ski Jacket Review

The brand of Helly Hansen needs no introduction to most ski and snowboard enthusiasts. Founded way back in 1877, the Norwegian brand has set the standards for quality, design and innovative protection ever since.

Saying all this, I have never reviewed a Helly Hansen product before and was keen to see if the ‘Ted’ ski / snowboard jacket lived up to the hype and reputation.

On first impressions the black jacket was sleek and stylish. Being of Alpine design, the Large size jacket was shorter and tighter than I normally have for snowboarding so I opted for the XL size which was perfect for how I like it.

The hood is ingeniously stored within the collar of the ‘Ted’ jacket. Although, practical, I was not too keen on this look and kept the hood unfolded and out.

Due to the unseasonably mild weather conditions I have not managed to test the jacket out in extreme cold conditions yet. This may change in the near future and if so, I will update this review to include the effectiveness of the Primaloft Silver insulation that the jacket boasts.

I did manage to to review the ‘Ted’ in mild weather and so could test out the unique venting system it has and without getting too technical,  the diagonal vent zips across the front, allow air in and to circulate through the jacket by utilising ‘negative spaces’ within the specially designed innovative material. This helps cool down and regulate the body’s temperature.

Using this system and another layer designed for warmth, the jacket works in the same way to keep you toasty when needed. Because the material has negative spaces within the material, it is a very light jacket.

The ‘Ted’ is fully water repellent and with a full seam sealed construction and 4-way full stretch fabric. This is so important for those heavy or wet slushy snow days and it certainly does the business. Even in a heavy downpour, the water just beads off the ‘Ted’ jacket as if being repelled by a powerful magnet.

There are a good number of pockets for gadgets and goggles, with a ski lift pass pocket on the sleeve. I prefer this as when it is on the sleeve you buzz in first time every time. I hate it when you have to try and lift your jacket up to the sensor or turn in a certain way when the ski pass is on the inside of a ski jacket – in the sleeve just makes sense!

I also like the dual front pockets in which the side ones can be used to warm your hands (obviously not while snowboarding or skiing!).

Although, very much a ski/snowboard jacket, it is stylish enough that you could easily wear the ‘Ted’ around town and not look out of place. Don’t get me wrong, it does not have a street/casual look and is obviously a ski jacket, but it is elegantly designed and would look good in most situations.

Overall, I am mightily impressed with the Helly Hansen Ted Ski Jacket. It ticks all the right boxes including not only looking good, but technically engineered for any scenario in a way that only those Scandinavians know how to.
