Helly Hansen Lifa Merino Seamless Base Layer

Helly Hansen Lifa Merino Seamless Base Layer Review

We have reviewed many base layers over the years, so is the Helly Hansen Lifa Merino Seamless base layer any different?

This review of the Helly Hansen Lifa Merino Seamless Base Layer was carried out early season in Tignes by Mark Barber.

Merino wool has got more and more popular over the years for the material of choice for base layers.  It has great warmth qualities and feels snug on the skin without being itchy.

All Merino wool base layers used to come at a premium and be very pricey. Now, you can pick up cheap merino wool base layers, but they often lack quality. Usually, being slightly itchy where the seams are.

With the Helly Hansen Lifa Merino base layer, I did not have that problem because it is completely seamless.  It was a joy to wear and felt snug without making me feel claustrophobic. The Lifa didn’t restrict on movement at all and felt like a second skin.

It wasn’t that cold in Tignes, but the Lifa still did it’s job with the blistering wind on top of Grand Motte.  This base layer will do you proud in the extreme cold of mid season. The Lifa actually has a two layer construction, with a Lifa® technology interior under the merino wool exterior. All in all, it makes for a very warm base layer.

Obviously, the Lifa would not suit early season or spring conditions as it would be too warm.  You would need a more technical base layer such as Burnt Custard for that

It is not a big thing, but I do like base layers with a zip at the top for ease of getting on and off. I am over 40 now and getting lazy like that!

The styling is simple and stylish with no gaudy colour schemes ( I am boring like that).

At £80, the Lifa is not the cheapest on the market, but you pay for quality.  Out on the mountains it is the quality that counts!
