Most of you will know Jamie Barrow as that crazy snowboarder who sped across a frozen lake being propelled by a jet powered backpack! That was one year ago and that world record breaking stunt went viral on Facebook. On Friday 30th January, Jamie will be returning to the same frozen lake at the picturesque resort of St.Moritz in Switzerland, to go bigger and better!
This time, in a world record first, Jamie Barrow will speed across the frozen lake being towed by a flying aircraft.
The aircraft will be on skis and Jamie will be pulled from a type of cord that is used in Wakeboarding. The aircraft will accelerate across the lake and take off flying low with Jamie still attached. When the aircraft needs to fly away, Jamie will simply let go.
Jamie got inspiration for the stunt from seeing old, faded, black and white photos of skiers being slowly taxied around the lake. The St. Moritz lake has also been used as a makeshift runway in the past and most notably during World War Two. St. Moritz is arguably the birthplace of winter tourism (1864) and another eccentric activity that is still enjoyed every winter is horse racing across the frozen lake.
Mitsubishi have been announced as the main sponsor for the event and Jamie will be travelling to Switzerland in style in a brand new, top of the range ASX. Once there, the final plans will be ironed out in preparation for the big day. Off course, timing for an event this size is essential and weather permitted, but with a week to go and St. Moritz getting a fresh sprinkling of snow, the signs look good.
As for Jamie, he is no stranger to daring snowboarding stunts! Officially Britain’s fastest snowboarder he reached a speed of almost 100mph. He also holds the Guinness World indoor speed record on a snowboard, fastest speed on a snowboard while being towed behind a vehicle, as well as a Guinness World Record for his stunt with the jet-powered backpack as already mentioned.
Snow.Guide wishes Jamie every success and look forward to his video of the stunt going viral on Facebook!
